Subject
Construction contract award for Library Basement Remodel
Summary and Background
As the construction of a new city hall was discussed and the proposed location became the existing site, the need for temporary office space became a necessary step. Concurrently, since Mark Rose arrived as Library Director, he and I have had discussions about the lack of adequate space in the library and the poor utilization of space in the basement of the library. As these two issues came together, the opportunity to work on both seemed very viable.
The remodel will relocate the bathrooms and set the stage to open up a large piece of the basement floor space to be available for stack space. It will also maximize the use of space by removing a number of small study rooms that were never very useful and push the staff offices to the edge of the space leaving more room for enhanced stack/public spaces.
The architecture firm Architects West has been working on this project from the beginning and designed the library remodel. The project has gotten a little bit more expensive since the original cost estimates due to some HVAC issues and some ADA cross slope issues with the sidewalk behind the library.
